After she had her children, Ginny visited Hogwarts, accidentally stumbling upon the Mirror of Erised.
When she looked into it, she found herself holding her children’s birth certificates, and all of their names weren’t shitty
LMAO!!! I always like to think of it as JKR paying homage to those characters or showing how much they mean to Harry, rather than suggesting he holds power in this relationship. It is entirely possible that Ginny wanted those names too because she loves Harry and knows how much those names mean to him and wanted their kids to be a tribute to that. Or that those people meant a lot to her too (well, a few of them, but obvs not as much as they do Harry.) I think Ginny’s too much of a strong character to let Harry name the kids if she didn’t agree with the names? Maybe they’re both insane people who have a penchant for insane names??? :D
It’s actually not a weird/grotesque thing for me, because my Dad named all of us (though admittedly, this raises my eyebrows a lot because though my Dad comes from a culture where men usually have the ‘say’, my Mum does not and I do think he wasn’t being fair to my Mum). My Mum actually wanted to call my sister Hannah, but she got called Asha instead (her middle name is Hannah)…
It’s definitely possible, but you have to remember: Harry wasn’t the only one to lose family because of the wars. Ginny lost Fred as well. Yet every. single. child is named after someone Harry lost. Even their middle names (save Lily)! And look, I love Harry so much. SFM (as I hopefully made clear in that meme last night). But whenever I look at those kids’ names … I grow really uncomfortable.
Ginny has a strong personality, but people with strong personalities can still end up in unequal marriages. And when it comes to Harry … I feel like that could easily happen given a) the hero worship that formed the basis of the relationship (and is still present even in HBP) and b) how much of Harry’s life Ginny would have difficulty understanding. Possession by Voldemort? Absolutely. Everything else? Not so much (the books certainly showed that Harry didn’t like to include Ginny in the part of his life).
We’re probably coming at this from different POVs as well, I guess? Like, I thought H/G was problematic from the outset (um, HBP outset, not PS outset), so that probably contributes to my discomfort with the names. And I definitely have a different personal perspective and opinion on the naming of one’s child. =)
Oh don’t get me wrong, I think the names are awful (apart from maybe Lily’s) and generally speaking, I feel it’s best not to name kids after someone else (because that’s a big burden to bear.) But I would like to think the naming had a much healthier basis. And yeah definitely - I’d like to think there was more to their relationship than what was in the books. I do like their relationship (though if I’m reading about, it’s usually a side-pairing to R/Hr and is conveyed in a healthy, equal manner) but I know it’s problematic, and could come across better if there were more details to it? Idk. Basically, I like to write off the entire epilogue because in my head, Ginny ends up with Draco instead :D Also, as much as I’m sure Harry is grateful about Snape, I just don’t believe he would ever name his child after him (even if it’s just the middle name) because knowing the whole picture wrg to him doesn’t erase how horrible he was to Harry (and he was really horrible!)
